The United Autoworkers Union Local 1250 is hopeful a new engine could be produced at a northeast Ohio plant and translate into hundreds of new jobs, as well as more job security for current workers.

The new engine would be four-cylinders that would be made at Brook Park’s Ford engine plant, known as Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1.

Local 1250 President Mike Gammella has been working with Ford for years to bring new engine production to the Brook Park facility.

“Right now, it looks like 600 new jobs,” Gammella said.

But by early Monday afternoon, several news outlets were reporting different jobs numbers.

The new engine will bring 250 new jobs, Gammella explained. Also under the proposed new deal, Ford would add another six cylinder shift to the existing two. This would create another 300 jobs. An additional 50 new jobs would be coming for a crank module line, explained Gammella.

But Cleveland Engine Plant No. 2 is slated to close in April. That plant employs 350 people, who may decide to go to Plant No. 1. That would mean only 250 new jobs instead of 600.

“Here is where I think some of the disconnect comes in,” Gammella said, referring to conflicting reports around Cleveland.

Either way, there will be 600 people employed in new positions, if the deal with Ford is ratified.

Local 1250 votes on the proposed deal on Thursday. Other UAW locals are expected to finish voting by October 18 on other deals around the country, which are tied to the deal in Brook Park. So for now, these new jobs still are a possibility, not a sure thing.
