The Ohio school board is unanimously backing a fix for Cleveland schools while stopping short of endorsing the plan by Mayor Frank Jackson that’s making its way through the Legislature.
After lengthy discussion Tuesday, the 19-member Ohio Board of Education resolved to support “a collaborative, bi-partisan process” involving all stakeholder groups to produce dramatic improvements in the Cleveland district’s academic and financial performance.
It’s the only Ohio school district controlled by a mayor.
Earlier wording was dropped that directly supported Jackson’s plan. It calls for longer schools years or days, preschool for all 4-year-olds, allowing merit pay for teachers, and reassigning teachers without regard to seniority.
The Cleveland Teachers Union opposes certain elements.
