Detroit Police have identified two suspects as part of a carjacking gang. Authorities now have two warrants against a 17- year old and a 20-year old in connection with robbery. Winans said he was disturbed that this happened “in the middle of the afternoon” and, at first, “nobody came to help.”
“I’m more saddened by this incident than being physically hurt. I grew up in Detroit and have never encountered anything like this. I want to thank every one for their calls of concern and words of encouragement. I believe in the power of prayer and the unity that can be gained in a community when we band together,” says Winans.
After the assault and theft of Winans’ gold watch and wallet containing $200, three or four young men carjacked his deep-burgundy 2012 Infiniti QX56 SUV he was driving. The altercation took place at a Citgo station in the southwest part of Detroit leaving the pastor with scrapes, bumps and ripped pants. Winans was driven to a local hospital where he was thoroughly examined for his injuries. Besides a broken finger and few bruises, doctors released him to go home where he is currently recovering from the incident.
“If they would have asked me for the money, I would have given it to them. Our young people have to find their purpose in life. It has to be bigger than sitting in a gas station waiting to rob innocent people. We’ve got to do a better job raising our young men,” states Winans. There’s has been no report of Winans’ vehicle or stolen property being returned.
According to a recent Detroit crime statistics report http://www.cityrating.com/crime-statistics/michigan/detroit.html there’s an overall downward trend in crime based on data from 11 years with violent crime decreasing and property crime decreasing. Based on this trend, the crime rate in Detroit for 2012 is expected to be lower than in 2009. Despite the projection of a decrease in crime innocent people are still being victimized and incidents are being reported daily to the police.
The city violent crime rate for Detroit in 2009 was higher than the national violent crime rate average by 358.02% and the city property crime rate in Detroit was higher than the national property crime rate average by 85.64%.
