The city of East Cleveland was awarded a $424,000 grant to improve safety around school zones.

The grant was provided by the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School program.

“School zone safety is a priority in our city. These funds will allow the city to install modern walk/don’t walk signals, crosswalks, street lights, sidewalks and enhanced school zone signage in order to better protect pedestrians, especially school children,” East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton said, in a newsroom on Thursday.

It will be pay for upgrades near Superior, Chamber, Mayfair Chambers and Prospect elementary schools to develop pedestrian safety.

“We are most grateful that ODOT agreed to fund these much needed upgrades,” Norton said.
