On another note, the pastor /singer is also the founder of Detroit based accredited school, The Marvin L. Winans Academy of Performing Arts.  In addition to celebrating its’15th Anniversary this year, a select number of students are set to participate in the 7th Annual World Choir Games. Also known as the Olympics of Choir Competition, more than 360 choirs from 48 countries have already registered to participate.  There are roughly 80 regional choirs representing 25 states.  The international sing-off has been hosted by Austria, China, Germany and South Korea prior to coming to the United States for the first time, July 4-14. The choir from Winans’ Academy will perform on Friday, July 13 at 1:30pm in Music Hall, and again on Saturday, July 14 singing, “O Happy Day”, with founder of academy Pastor Winans.  The students’ talent earned them a trip to the games as invited guests to perform and compete.

Winans thoughts on academy’s achievements, “We’ve been so successful that the Detroit Public School system has asked us to take over a school and turn it around. We’re excited and also working on another Winans Academy of Performing Arts (W.A.P.A.) in St. Louis scheduled to open in 2013. Education is central to the development of this generation, when they’re building more prisons than schools.”
