Bishop T.D. Jakes, head of Dallas megachurch The Potter’s House and the successful film producer behind Jumping the Broom, was honored by McDonald’s during Friday’s 365 Black Awards at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.

Acknowledged for his work in the community, Jakes noted how wonderful it was to receive recognition not just for what he says from the pulpit but his actions. The spiritual leader spoke to The Root about producing Winnie, a Winnie Mandela biopic starring Jennifer Hudson, with Terrence Howard as Nelson Mandela. Jakes, who was accompanied by his daughter on the red carpet, weighed in on fellow pastor Creflo Dollar’s recent arrest, which he called a “family matter,” and talked about how he disciplined his own children.

“I did [spank], when it was appropriate …” he said. “I am so glad to be past that point, I can tell you!”
