Elyria is all dressed up in red, white and blue and for a good reason. Mayor Holly Brinda officially proclaimed Wednesday as Tianna Madison Day in Elyria , honoring her for her bid in the 2012 London summer Olympics.

“The city is really pumped. We started getting calls about three weeks ago ‘What are we going to do? What are we going to do?'” said Brinda.

Not since 1924, 88 years ago, has Elyria had an Olympic contender. Tianna will compete in the 100-meter run and 400×100 relay in London this summer.

“Were just so proud of her and were thrilled that she has the world stage. If she can share a little bit about Elyria, Ohio that would be great too,” said Brinda.

Wednesday night more than a hundred residents, friends, and family gathered on Ely Square for a rally. Even though Tianna could not attend, the city wants her to know they support her. Proclamations, signed banners and video from the event will be taken to her in London by her parents.

“Elyria loves Tianna, Elyria believes in Tianna, and supports Tianna and were routing for Tianna to bring back the gold,” said her mother JoAnne Madison.

This is Tianna’s second attempt at the Olympics. It has been a long road since winning nine state championships in high school.
