Hundreds turned out in Cleveland for the 29th Annual National Nightout. Cleveland police planned five events marking the annual stand against crime across the city.
The largest was at John Adams High School off East 116th Street where the Cleveland police helicopter landed in the parking lot, and displays and activities for kids lined the practice fields.
Fourth District Commander Deon McCaulley said it’s a chance for police and the community they serve to build alliances and knock down stereotypes.
“That casual interaction is a very important interaction only because it allows them to see that we’re people. It allows them to see that we do care about the community just as much as they care about their own neighborhood,” McCaulley said.
Latricia Ogletree, who was there with her kids, agrees.
“They’re only here to help you so you might as well get used to them, you know. Get to know them young so you can grow up without of fear of them,” she said.
Nationwide, more than 37 million people were expected to take part in Night Out events.
