Bebe Winans, a registered Democrat who campaigned for President Obama, will be closing outthe Republican National Convention in Tampa on Thursday night.

Why is he crossing party lines? For starters, he doesn’t see it that way.

“I want to remind people that before any association with any party that we’re all Americans,” he told The Washington Post of the unpaid gig. “No matter who wins, if we don’t come together and really invest in the country we love, we’re not going to solve the problems.”

Winans said he told the RNC that he would likely be singing at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, too, and that they had no problems with that. After all, he sang in 2004 at the DNC.

But, he told the Post, “the invitation was taken back,” Winans said. “No hard feelings,” he added. DNC officials have not commented.

Other singers to look out for in the days ahead performing for the Republican gathering include: American Idol alums Danny Gokey and Taylor Hicks.
