For actor Michael Jai White, whose career has largely been defined by action roles in movies such as The Dark Knight and “Exit Wounds” to Jean Claude Van Damme’s “Universal Soldier” or the ever bickering “Marcus” in Tyler Perry’s top grossing “Why Did I Get Married” (and the 2010 sequel), the chance to play a character with strong parallels to his own life is what he lives for as an actor. And with the highly-publicized premiere of gmc TV’s Somebody’s Child. White had that chance.

“I really liked the story. It was a family drama with a lot of heart and it really spoke to me,” says the 44-year old actor, who stars in the TBS television sitcom, Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse. “I hadn’t done anything like that in a long time. I started out in drama on stage, but as soon as you do a small amount of action type of stuff you start becoming defined by that, so to balance out some of the other things I was doing I really jumped at the chance to do this.”

The two-hour television movie is about a woman leaning on her son for support as she battles kidney failure. A divine twist of fate brings an ex-convict to the scene, who as it turns out, is not a stranger at all.

In the story of a son losing hope, a mother gaining faith, and God’s divine and perfect plan, White plays Douglas, who is a successful business owner, single parent, and a pillar of his community – a role model for his nine-year-old son Jacob while also supporting his ailing mother, financially and emotionally. A son whose life is turned upside down when he finds his dying mother had another son – his identical twin.

“It teaches a lot about family and forgiveness and faith and I believe it’s one of those types of movies that changes your life for the better,” White says.

It means a lot to the Brooklyn native who is a lot like Douglas: successful, intelligent and family-oriented.

“The trend has been so anti-family for so long that kids don’t have TV shows or movies with moral values anymore,” Williams states.
