Dontavies Boatwright, finalist from Sunday Best season 2 has died of an apparent heart attack. He was 33 years old.

Dontavies was one of the most memorable contestants from his season and even after his departure from the show kept himself busy in the gospel music industry as a radio announcer in Jacksonville, FL along with singing at industry events and concerts all over the country.

Equal parts classical vocalist and Sunday morning squaller, Dontavies was a rare breed of modern gospel singer. In an era where high notes are sometimes misused to determine a singer’s skill level, Dontavies was a soaring and unapologetic baritone who’s range was found in his depth.

Aside from his ability to sing, he was genuinely a nice guy and always had a smile on his face. He constantly joked with me that I never took any photos with him when we’d see each other, so each time we’d take a photo as if it were the first time until we’d see each other again and he’d sure enough say “You take pictures with everybody but me, let’s take one right now!”

Our thoughts and prayers are with Dontavies’ family.
