Police and SWAT forces used tear gas after repeated warnings and negotiations to end a standoff on Sutton Road in Shaker Heights overnight Wednesday.

The standoff began just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Sutton Road was closed in the area while police negotiated with a suspect inside of an apartment on Sutton Place.

The suspect, who was barricaded inside of an apartment, was said to be off his medication and suffering from a mental illness, reports say.

Reports also indicate that the standoff began at a party, where guests at the party distanced themselves from the suspect and called police. Details are unclear.

Beachwood sent their SWAT unit to assist.

The suspect’s mother was among the people negotiating with him on the loud speaker.

Tear gas was used to draw the suspect out of the apartment. He came out peacefully and was arrested. He was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center’s psychiatric ward for evaluation.

There is no word on exactly how the situation started.
