1. Retired Gen. Schwarzkopf Dead at 78

Retired General H. Normal Schwarzkopf, who commanded the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein’s forces out of Kuwait in 1991 has died. He was 78-years-old.

2. Fiscal Cliff: Milk Prices Could Hit $8

Come Dec. 31, Washington’s inaction with the looming fiscal cliff could push the nation’s milk prices as much as $6 to $8 per gallon. In order to avoid this rise in cost, Congress must pass a farm bill renewing federal support for agriculture programs.

3. SeaWorld Files for IPO

SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. has filed for an initial public offering of stock, the company announced Thursday. SeaWorld’s initial offering is aimed at raising $100 million.

4. Academy Award Voting Goes Electronic

For the first time in 85 years, voting for Academy Award nominees and winners will take place electronically, rather than on paper ballots. However, voting has been underway for several days now and the Academy has received multiple complaints about difficulty with the system.

5. 315.1M Living in U.S. as of New Year’s Day

An estimated 315.1 million people will be living in the U.S. on New Year’s Day, according to the Census Bureau. This number is an increase of 2.3 million people from January 1 this year.
