Jennifer Hudson was on hand at the Sundance Film Festival to discuss her starring role in the Alicia Keys-helmed The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete.

Michael Starrbury, who is currently re-writing a Tupac biopic, penned the film, which stars Jennifer as mother and tatted-up heroin addict, “Gloria.” Jeffrey Wright and Anthony Mackie co-star.

Jennifer spoke to “Access Hollywood” about the challenges of preparing for such a complicated character, as well as trying to differentiate the real world from fiction for her son David Jr.“It was definitely a challenge,” said Jennifer. “Preparing for the role I would rehearse my moments and my son would get scared of me. [He would say] ‘My mommy doesn’t talk to me like that,’ and ‘ooh, you’re mean.’”

Jennifer used the experience as a teaching tool to describe acting to the 3-year-old. “I found myself explaining to him, ‘no, mommy is going to play a really mean mommy to another little boy,’” described Jennifer.

The sultry singer also talked about the experience of having to see life through the eyes of someone who is addicted to heroin. “That world was so foreign to me and it exposed me to so much in preparing for the role,” lamented Jennifer, continuing, “I got to go to rehab centers and sit with heroin addicts and hear their stories.”

The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, which is directed by George Tillman Jr., is slated for release later this year.
