A brief fire at the West Side Market left the historic building filled with billows of smoke early Wednesday morning.

An overnight security guard reported the fire at Sebastian’s Meats inside the market before 2:30 a.m. Crews quickly controlled the fire, containing it to the one stand, but a fire official says the building sustained heavy smoke damage.

It could take hours for the smoke inside the building to clear out and for fire crews to finish their work at the scene. The fire department is bringing in special fans in an effort to vent the smoke trapped in the ceiling.

There is no official word from market officials on whether the market will be open today. The health department will ultimately have to make that call. More information forthcoming
