It’s a not-so-proud moment for the church as Ebony Magazine’s “real life scandal” issue takes over newsstands nationwide. Though Kerry Washington, star of ABC’s hit show “Scandal” is prominently featured on the cover, it is the “Sex, Lies & the Pulpit” headline that steals the show.

All the pride and excitement Ebony readers of faith felt about Christian power couples Bishop T.D. and Mrs. Serita Jakes, and DeVon Franklin and Meagan Good, being featured in the February issue, is, this time around, replaced with a bit of sadness and shame.

Inside the glossy pages of the March “Scandal Issue,” Ebony editors have listed 50 of the most scandalous events to rock black culture. Among them is an article titled, “What Really Happened to Pastor Zachery Tims?” which takes a closer look at the suspicious death of the former leader of New Destiny Christian Center in Apopka, Fl.
In December, New York County Supreme Court Judge Cynthia S. Kern ruled that there were no laws strictly prohibiting the medical examiner’s office from publicly disclosing Tims’ cause of death–a routine process in high-profile cases.
But Madeline Tims, mother of the deceased, appealed the judge’s decision to the appellate court the following January, saying that the cause of death would be an embarrassment to the family.
