Throughout the course of her career, Angela Bassett has portrayed some of history’s most prominent figures, including Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks and Dr. Betty Shabazz, to name a few.
This week during an appearance on HuffPost Live, the Yale University alum opened on how her 1993 Golden Globe-winning role as Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got To Do With It” still resonates today amongst abused women such as Rihanna, who famously fought it out with her on-again boyfriend Chris Brown in 2009.
“I think a spotlight on it is shameful. So in those cases when we can shine a light on it then hopefully we can deal with it, rectify it,” she said to HuffPost Live host Marc Lamont Hill. “We certainly can give voice to it, but we also have to give aid to it.”
“I don’t want to vilify [Chris Brown] forever, because he’s a young person and he still has an opportunity to become his best self. So that’s what I certainly hope, but it’s not something that we should give special dispensation because of who you are or what you do.”
Bassett also shared her thoughts on black women, such as Kerry Washington, landing lead roles in Hollywood.
