Angry residents are calling on the Medina City School District board and superintendent to resign.

“I feel we need to start from scratch,” said Medina parent Tyra Mone. “I feel the community has really lost all confidence in the board, in their ideas, their poor judgment.”

The controversy is over the terms of Superintendent Randy Stepp’s contract. Among other things, it allowed him to receive more than $200,000 from the Medina County Educational Service Center to pay the bill for his education.  Board members said they didn’t know the amount was that high.

School board president Charles Freeman resigned on Tuesday. However, the new board chairman, Karla Robinson, PhD, said she’s not stepping down.

“I believe in cleaning up my own messes,” she said. “I believe that when I make a mistake it is incumbent upon me to fix it as best I can.”

Meanwhile, the school treasurer is working on a plan to strengthen the system of checks and balances.
