ET “The Sheards” reality TV star, Kierra Sheard, headed into the tattoo parlor with her best friend to ink permanent symbols of their friendship on their skin. The decision to get matching tattoos, however, made the preacher’s daughter very nervous.

During a recent episode of her family’s reality show, the 25-year-old gospel singer’s initial excitement about rocking new ink, turned into fear and discomfort.

“As a preacher’s kid, I’m scared this might not go over well,” she said during her confessional. “This is putting me in a really uncomfortable head space.”

When it comes to tattooing, Kierra is not alone in her wariness of the practice.

Many Christians that say tattoos are sinful use Leviticus 19:28 to support their perspective. That scripture says, “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.”

Those who reject a literal interpretation of the scripture, however, say God forbade the Israelites from this practice because it was associated with pagan idolatry.  In those days, mourners would actually cut themselves and get tattoos as a way of ceremonially honoring, and worshiping dead people.

Because God did not want his chosen people to be aligned or associated with pagan rituals, He told them not to make any such markings on their bodies.

Scholars who view the passage in Leviticus in this context, say Christians can feel free to get tattoos if they wish to do so, adding, what is in the heart matters most to the Lord.

“I feel some kind of way. My dad would so flip out if I came home with a tattoo!” Kierra worried, looking panicked.

“Getting a tattoo is not a sin,” her best friend responded.

But still, Kierra maintained, “I don’t feel good about getting this tattoo. It’s a gray area in the Bible to me. So if there’s gray area, there’s some gray area that can send you right to hell.”
