There is nothing fun about facing diabetes, but fighting it, well, ABC’s The View co-host Sherri Shepherd, promises to make it a hoot!

“Moms and dads, don’t donothing just because it’s scary,” she tweeted. “I wrote this book for you and I promise that I’ll make it fun!”

Her new book, Plan D: How To Lose Weight And Beat Diabetes (Even If You Don’t Have It), which releases Tuesday, April 30, was written from personal experience.

In 2007, the Christian wife, mom, actress, comedian, and television host was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at age 41—something she took as the wake-up call she needed to change her lifestyle and improve her health.

For years, Shepherd, just like millions of other women, was told that she was pre-diabetic, but ignored her doctor’s advice to lose weight and get healthy before she developed full blown diabetes.

When she got the official diagnosis of the same disease that took her mother’s life, Shepherd was terrified.

“At the time, it was just like a death sentence,” she said in an interview with ABC 36 Health Reporter Kristi Runyon.

“I thought, oh my gosh! I’m gonna get my foot cut off. I’m gonna die. My son was 2 years old at the time and I realized, if I wanted to be around for my son… I needed to make a change in my eating. I needed to start exercising, because I didn’t want to die.”
