Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry will grace the June 2013 cover of ESSENCE magazine, which will hit newsstands May 10th! Inside the pages they will share why they lean on each other; as well as discuss the power of “two” in their new business relationship!
In the June 2013 issue of ESSENCE magazine, cover stars Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry describe the ways they’ve helped and inspired each other through the years — a friendship and partnership that has culminated in a TV deal giving Oprah exclusive rights to broadcast all the original shows written, directed and produced by Tyler Perry this year and ever after.
In the struggling phase of OWN, Oprah recalls, “I was talking to [Tyler] one morning, feeling so overwhelmed I said, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do.’ He said, ‘Let me pray with you.’ He’s so good at praying that I call him Moses. He started praying and we continued having conversations, and he said, ‘I think I can help you.’ That’s when we started talking about working together. The truth is that he told me I didn’t have anything fun and sexy on my station. ‘Where are the sexy people? Where’s the fun?’ he said. ‘You’re so serious.’ That’s how all of this really started. I wanted to get my fun and sexy on.”
For Tyler’s part, working with Oprah on new series like the drama The Haves and the Have Nots (premiering May 28th) and the sitcom Love Thy Neighbor (May 29th) “challenged me to push myself in terms of my writing and level of thinking,” he says. “I’m hoping that the energy of our coming together will go out to other people.”
