Washington’s role as DC fixer Olivia Pope, the lone African American female lead character currently on TV (with NBC’s “Deception” now cancelled), picks up a baton handed off by her hero and “Tyler Perry Presents Peeples” costar Diahann Carroll, who made history in 1968 as the first black actress in television history to star in her own series. “Julia,” for NBC, rocketed to the top of the Nielsen ratings and earned an Emmy nomination in its first season.

As previously reported, Kerry shot “Peeples” before “Scandal” ever existed. But the 36-year-old Bronx native said the close friendship she formed with Carroll during filming came in handy when the Shonda Rhimesdrama came a’calling.
