The Pentecostal Assemblies of the World is using its Indianapolis convention this week to seek possible bone marrow donors to help African-Americans diagnosed with leukemia and other blood diseases.

The Indianapolis Star reports the drive was sparked by the case of 31-year-old Melanie Scott. She has leukemia and couldn’t find a bone marrow match among her siblings.

Only about 7 percent of potential donors in the Be The Match Registry are African-American. White patients have a 93 percent chance of finding a match through the list of 10.5 million potential donors worldwide.
Scott has already received a transplant from a newborn’s umbilical cord. But Pentecostal Assemblies of the World official Crisette Ellis says the group decided to hold the donor drive to help others still awaiting a match.
Scott is the daughter of Bishop Leonard and Christine Scott
