Brian Hoyer was not supposed to play a lot on Thursday night in Chicago, but the former St. Ignatius quarterback got a surprise start for the Browns and directed the team to an 18-16 victory in the final preseason game against the Bears.

Hoyer was pressed into action when Jason Campbell could not shake the flu-like symptoms he dealt with for a couple of days.

Hoyer made it count. The veteran backup was 24 of 35 for 307 yards in the victory with one TD pass and two interceptions and a QB rating of 81.5.

He directed the team to a 4th quarter TD that brought the team within one point, and then took the Browns to within field goal range where Spencer Lanning hit a 40-yard field goal for the winning points.

Hoyer hooked up with Josh Gordon several times for big gains but Gordon will now be out of the loop as he serves a two-game suspension to start the season.

David Nelson, the tall receiver the Browns signed in free agency, saw his first action. He caught 4 passes for 54 yards. Nelson was coming back from blowing out his ACL in the season’s first game in 2012.
