Birmingham continues to commemorate the civil rights campaign in 1963 with Empowerment Week Sept. 11 through 15. 

Empowerment Week features five days of activity that culminate on Sept. 15, the 50th Anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church.

Several of the week’s activities will take place at 16th Street Baptist Church, located at the corner of 6th Avenue North and 16th Street North.

Empowerment Week will include speeches, panel discussions, concerts, festivals and more. In addition to more than 100 local and national businesses and organizations participating, several stars are slated to participate, including Jamie Foxx, Spike Lee, Bill Cosby, Jill Scott, CeCe Winans, Donnie McClurkin, Condoleezza Rice, Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks.

The week is part of Birmingham’s 50 Years Forward campaign to recognize civil rights movement events that happened in Birmingham during 1963
