One of Cleveland’s neighborhoods, where high-profile crimes have happened, is getting a $1 million grant to help combat crime.
The U.S. Justice Department awarded the funds this week. It’ll be used specifically in the Mount Pleasant area.
“I just want to thank the federal government for listening to the cries of the people here in the community, and bringing back one million dollars,” said Councilman Zack Reed who represents the ward. “As they say, show me the money, and they showed us the money, and now we’re going to use this money to reduce the crime in this community.”
There have been some high-profile cases in the neighborhood. Back in 2009, 11 bodies were found in and around Anthony Sowell’s home. Just this year, three women were murdered near East 93rd.
The grant money will be used in a number of ways and will help fund different programs. One of them focuses on cracking down on gun violence, while another aims to rehab former prisoners.
“I think it’s wonderful,” said Mary Miller who lives in the area.
