The city of Avon Lake joined hundreds of communities across the country with a fitting and lasting tribute to America’s service men and women Sunday.

A newly commissioned Blue Star Memorial marker was dedicated at Veterans Park. The Blue Star Memorial program dates back to World War II.

The marker now honors all men and women who have served, who are serving or will serve in the U.S. Armed Services.

The Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club raised funds to purchase the memorial. It joined the National Council of State Garden Clubs that place Blue Star Memorial markers along highways across the country.

Kathryn Usher is a World War II WAVES veteran and a longtime Garden Club member who worked to get the memorial marker in Avon Lake.

“Thank the people that are remembering veterans by placing these along the highways for Blue Star mothers, because mothers serve too, families serve too,” she said.
