The United States of America has a long and dark history of presidential assassinations and assassination attempts. Four U.S. Presidents have been killed while in office, and there have been more than 20 attempts to kill sitting and former presidents. Most of the deaths and attempts to take the life of the Commander-in-chief were politically motivated actions, some were carried out by mentally unstable people, but all attacks were looked upon as hideous, unforgivable actions and were sometimes met with jail time and even in some cases death (John Wilkes Booth, was killed for his assassination of Abraham Lincoln). But there is a very erie trend that is taking place on twitter of people threatening President Obama’s life, calling for people to just man up and shoot the 44th President, which needs to be stopped immediately.

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits making any law abridging the freedom of speech, but does this mean people can jump on their social networks and make idle threats at the Leader of the Free World (or anyone else for that matter)? From 2001 to 2009, America experienced one of the worst President’s in American History. George W. Bush and his administration started a war on the backs of numerous lies, let thousands of Americans suffer and die in his mishandling of Hurricane Katrina, and led us into a financial crisis , which we still suffer from more than 5 years later. Grumblings about getting George W. Bush out of office were heard all throughout the country, but what you didn’t hear were people making public statements about wanting George W. Bush assassinated.

Now, Barack Obama is our president and you can’t go one day without seeing an article or blog post with a ton of screenshots of people on twitter pleading for the assassination of a loving man with a wife, and two beautiful children. What gives you the right to call for another human being’s life? Call it a race thing, call it young people now knowing any better, call it what you want, but it’s disgusting!  (I refuse to post any of the comments I’ve seen and read on twitter, but if you would like to read them yourself, check out this article > http://bit.ly/19ZOlV7)

The worst part about this horrific trend is that most of the people who are making these outrageous statements on twitter about wanting the president dead are young people under the age of 25. These kids have no history or connection to the assassination of John F. Kennedy or the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan. They have no one to explain the pain and heartbreak this country went through when Kennedy was shot and killed. They don’t know there history, nor do they care. But they will regret what they say when Secret Service officials come to their front door for a little chat.

We don’t have to agree with the president, but assassinations are WRONG! Condoning the taking of any person’s life because you don’t agree with his or her policies is absurd and should never be tolerated.

President Obama,  I pray for your safety and the safety of your family.
