Dyslexia, a developmental reading disorder, causes difficulties with spelling, reading, writing, and finding the proper words when speaking. A child might be unable to read the word volcano, or might say the similar-sounding “tornado” when presented with a picture, even though he or she knows what a volcano is.

Nevertheless, people with dyslexia may have other language-related deficits such as problems understanding rapid speech, difficulty in following complex or multi-part instructions, or trouble remembering things in correct sequence. Because of the difficulty in processing letter sounds, people with dyslexia are often poor spellers.
