It is a problem in cities, suburbs, and in nearly every community in our area – hunger.
The shelves are partially bare at the Parma Heights Food Pantry.
“Every week, we’ve been registering 10 to 15 new families,” said Director Ann George.
George started the food pantry seven years ago. Food is going out faster than ever before and George said those who are asking for help has changed too.
“Families with young children. It breaks my heart when kids come in and say, oh look they have peanut butter, or tuna fish. They should be excited about a toy or a book but not food,” added George.
The Catholic Works of Mercy Food Pantry at Saint Ambrose in Brunswick has quadrupled in size in the last two years. Organizers expect the need to get only worse because of cuts in food stamps.
