The old Innerbelt Bridge will be demolished using a mixture of traditional and explosive demolition, ODOT said Monday.

Bridge railings, lights, barriers and the concrete driving surface, as well as specific spans over the river and railroads, will all be removed using traditional methods.

A professional demolition company will take care of the controlled demolition, setting a safety perimeter of 1,000 feet.

More details will be made available in the spring, ODOT said, but the entire bridge is expected to be demolished by this summer.

ODOT is currently replacing the 1950s bridge with two bridges, the first of which, named in honor of statesman George V. Voinovich, was opened to traffic in Nov.
