Cleveland police have made an arrest in the shooting death of a little girl on the city’s west side.

Police tell 19 Action News they will release more details on the suspect momentarily.

Jermani Brooks, 5, and her mother, Noni, 33, were both shot in the head as they sat in an SUV in the 12800 block of Crossburn Avenue. Jermani was killed and Noni remains hospitalized in good condition.

Noni’s boyfriend and an infant were also in the SUV at the time of the shooting, but were not injured.

According to police, the gunman exited a green SUV and fired multiple shots into the victim SUV. After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in the green SUV.

Multiple sources tell 19 Action News that some kind of “football debt” was mentioned at the scene and may have played a role. A motive remains under investigation.

There will be a vigil for Noni and Jermani Brooks on Thursday. It is the day the little girl would have turned 6-years-old.
