Ohio senators have unanimously passed a bill to let schools take up to four additional calamity days this year, with teachers reporting on one. But first, districts must use four contingency days.
It was unclear how the House, which passed an earlier version, would respond.
The bill would require districts to first use four contingency days built into their schedules before getting any extra days that they would not have to make up.
Snow and frigid temperatures led many districts across Ohio to exhaust their five allowable calamity days. Some have cancelled classes for 10 or more days.
The bill would let districts make up the time by lengthening school days by 30-minute increments. High school seniors would be excused from makeup days that occur after their graduation ceremonies.
