1. FORT HOOD SHOOTING

Not again: Haven’t we been through this before? Fort Hood, that sprawling Army post in Texas, is seared in our collective memory for that awful incident in 2009 when Maj. Nidal Hasan went on a shooting spree, killing 13 people and wounding 32. Wednesday afternoon, it happened again.

2.FORT HOOD GUNMAN

Why?: The man who opened fire at Fort Hood was a married father of a little girl, a veteran who served four months in Iraq, and a soldier undergoing treatment for mental health issues. There aren’t indications that this was a terrorist act, but there are reports there may have been an argument in one of the unit areas. “Obviously, we are digging deep into his background, any criminal or psychiatric history, his experiences in combat,” the post’s commanding general said. All of the things you would expect us to do are being done right now.”

3. MISSING PLANE

Not giving up: All 227 passengers have been cleared of any role in the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Investigators have scrutinized those who prepared food for the flight, those who packed the cargo, and those who were to receive the cargo in China. And search crews have scoured the vast southern Indian Ocean for days for a sign – any sign – of the missing plane. Today is Day 27. So far, nothing.
