This week marks National Safe Boating Week and the Cleveland Coast Guard is not only prepared, but wants Northeast Ohio boaters to be prepared.

“When we talk about the world of recreational boating, you’ve got the Coast Guard. A lot of us are boaters,” said Mike Baron, Recreational Boating Safety Specialist for the 9th District Coast Guard. “We joined the Coast Guard because we like to be on the water. But we are a safety and a regulatory agency.”

National Safe Boating Week is the week before Memorial Day weekend, which is the unofficial start to summer for many people. It is also when those summer soldiers return to the water after not having boated for half a year.

“That’s usually the first weekend people have time off, the weather is good, they take back to the water. In a lot of cases, the last time people touched their boats was Labor Day,” Baron said. “Did they put their plug in? Are there life jackets on board – are they working?”
