Despite a packed house of teachers armed with blue shirts and signs reading, “I support my sister”, the Cleveland School board voted 9-0 to approve recommendations that 17 teachers lose their jobs. The teachers were notified earlier this month that their contracts would not be renewed.
“They were blindsided,” said Cleveland Teachers Union president David Quolke. Well over a hundred teachers sounded off against the dismissal during the public comment portion of the meeting.
Teachers said things like, “We are the most mistreated in the school district.” Others said, “It doesn’t matter how good a teacher you are in this district because you might find yourself fired at the end of the school year.”
Originally, 68 notices were sent out, but through resignations, retirements, appeals and re-evaluations, the number was cut down to 17.
Teachers who were let go still have one more opportunity to appeal. That will take place at the next school board meeting. Currently, there are more than 150 teaching positions open at the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.
