A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday to mark the opening of a complex that will provide housing and supportive services for local homeless veterans.

The Arlington Veterans Housing Project will provide 10 units of housing for veterans who are homeless and have a special need.

Through the East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation and project development partners, each veteran will have on-site case management to coordinate supportive services.

“This property was a blighting influence and a source of criminal activity,” said Grady Appleton, the president and CEO of EANDC. “Now it is a neighborhood asset designed to re-start lives.”

Chris, a 32-year-old army veteran who did not want to reveal his last name, was the first resident to move in.

“My entire life I’ve never had an apartment this nice,” Chris said.

He has struggled to keep a job and with addiction. He spent 6 months in an Akron homeless shelter in 2010.
