The scenes were familiar in the communities across Northeast Ohio, community members interacting with police, children getting an up close look at cruisers, police dogs and high tech equipment. It was all part of National Night Out, the 31st observance of the festivities held the first Tuesday in August in more than 16,000 communities.

In Cleveland Heights they were marking their first Night Out, a gathering that comes just a month after the murder of popular bar and restaurant owner Jim Brennan inside Brennan’s Colony on Lee Road. It was a crime that both shocked and united this east side community and played a key role in the decision of some to come out.

“For me that was one of the driver’s of coming,” said Gina Drobnick. “Certainly given what Cleveland Heights has experienced over the past month I thought this was a good community event.”

With emotions still raw, Cleveland Heights Police Chief Jeffrey Robertson said it was a chance to aid in the healing process.
