Unrest after vigil: Confrontations between police andresidents of a St. Louis suburb raged into the night after a fatal weekend shooting of a teen by an officer. Crowds gathered yesterday for a vigil for Michael Brown, 18, in the Missouri town of Ferguson. Protesters hurled bottles at officers and kicked police cars parked on the streets.


Humanitarian, political crises: A crisis so dire thatfamilies are fleeing to Syria. A militant threat so strong that U.S. forces are striking from the sky. And a power struggle so tense that it could derail hopes for political stability. As Iraq’s political and humanitarian crises escalate simultaneously, foreign countries are getting more deeply involved.


Holding – for now: A new cease-fire between Israel and Hamas appears to be holding today. The lull in fighting, planned to last for three days, is expected to allow another round of indirect negotiations between Israeli and Palestinian officials aimed at finding a more permanent end to hostilities in the Gaza conflict.
