The sounds of hammers, saws and drills signaled progress Wednesday on Clement Avenue in Cleveland’s Slavic Village neighborhood, as staff and volunteers of Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity looked to make the dream of owning a home a reality for four partner families.

“There was multiple homes on this street that were vacant, that needed some rescue, and Habitat is here to rescue those homes and put families back into them,” said Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity operations director Rob Grimm.

One of the four Clement Avenue Habitat homes is now occupied by a partner family. Two of the homes are currently being rehabbed, the first being ready for occupancy by Thanksgiving, the second being ready for move-in by Christmas. Construction at the fourth home will begin in two weeks.

Habitat volunteers, experienced and new, had a similar goal of making a difference in the lives of others.
