LeBron James and Kyrie Irving made a statement Monday evening, wearing shirts that read “I Can’t Breathe” while warming up before a game against the Brooklyn Nets.

The reference is in protests of the choking death of Eric Garner.

The New York City Police officer who was seen in a video choking Garner was not indicted in his death , leading to protests throughout the country .

James and Irving are among the latest athletes to protest recent events involving police.

Last week, St. Louis Rams’ players exited the tunnel to take the field with their hands up , a popular symbol among Ferguson protesters.
