And the winner is…

Ebola fighters.

“Time” Magazine editor, Nancy Gibbs, appeared on the “Today” show Wednesday morning to reveal their selection for 2014’s “Person of the Year.”

“These men and women did the hard and dangerous work,” Gibbs said of their choice.

The annual selection is not a popularity contest. Instead, “Person of the Year” is based on who made a significant impact within the year for better or worse.

The issue, which features multiple different cover options, hits newsstands on Friday.

The top five options were ranked as follows:

5. Jack Ma, Alibaba founder

4. Masoud Barzani, President of Iraqi Kurdistan

3. Vladimir Putin, President of Russia

2. Ferguson protesters

1. Ebola fighters

The three other finalists included:

– Tim Cook, Apple CEO

– Taylor Swift, pop star

– Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner

2013’s “Person of the Year” was Pope Francis.
