Little did spoken word artist Steven Prescod (pictured on stage) ever fathom that one day, he would not only entertain U.K.’s royal couple, Prince William (pictured second from right, first row) and Kate Middleton (pictured third from right, first row) but that his royal highness would actually provide him with his personal phone number. The digits were given so that he could help further Prescod’s career, reports the New York Daily News.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited New York City on a whirlwind 3-day tour and one of their stops included The Door, a Manhattan non-profit agency that helps to empower young people to reach their potential by providing comprehensive youth development services.  The organization hosted the couple and provided them with youth performances that included song, dance and theatrical pieces.

Through their royal foundation, the Duke and Duchess show their concern for the lives of young people, including efforts around health, education and access to opportunity.  The Door/The CityKids Foundation gave the royals a chance to experience New York City’s innovative, effective models that support the needs of young people.

When 22-year-old Prescod took the stage and performed a spoken word piece about his struggles, both Prince William and Kate were reportedly transfixed by the young man’s every word.  Prescod spoke about his 7-year incarceration stint for assault and how his father was sent off to prison when he was a year old.

After, according to Prescod, “[Prince] William said he wanted to help me put this together,” the Brooklyn resident told the New York Daily News. “He gave me his contact number and said to reach out to him.”

Prescod’s account was confirmed by a former Door alumni, Ely Olivero, who reportedly witnessed the exchange between Prince William and the spoken word dramatist.  Olivero told the New York Daily News that Prince William said,“being among us was the best moment they had experienced” during their three-day trip to New York City.
