The holidays are supposed to be a  time of good cheer, family gatherings, and feelings of peace and joy. But for some, that’s a vision that only happens in the movies. For them, this time of year sets the stage for what could be a very explosive situation.

Intimate Partner Violence or IPV occurs between two people who are in an intimate relationship, albeit dating or married.

According to the Division of Violence Prevention, IPV includes four types of distinctive behavior: Physical violence, sexual violence, stalking and psychological aggression.

Some of these can occur at the same time.

Those who are victims of IPV know all too well the stress that comes with the holiday season. So, they will do whatever they have to do to keep things calm and peaceful in the household.

According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, calls actually decrease during the holidays because victims stay silent about their abuse.
