In 2012, Lecrae Moore became the first rapper to win a “Best Gospel Album” Grammy®. He will likely be the last.
Billboard’s policy change is virtually shutting the door on rap/hip-hop songs’ entry into the genre.
According to the publication, 2014 marks the final year that Christian rap/hip-hop titles will be deemed eligible for Billboard’s Gospel charts.
Instead, they will be categorized as Christian Albums, Christian Digital Songs, Christian Streaming Songs, and will be eligible for placement on the multi-metric Hot Christian Songs charts.
This could arguably hurt the chances of predominantly African-American Christian rap artists to chart on Billboard, since the Christian market is dominated by white artists.
Not to mention, the competition is far stiffer.
Moore, of course, is the obvious exception.
His seventh LP, Anomaly, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 88,000 copies in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan.
