Residents in neighborhoods along East 93rd Street say they’ve been living in fear because of an abandoned church on Orleans Avenue.

According to Cleveland Housing Court records, the property owned by Greater Tabernacle Church has been vacant for more than five years, and has deteriorated so much, the church bells have fallen through the first floor below.

Anita Gardner, with the Concerned Citizens Community Council believes the church has been an extreme hazard for years.

Gardner told NewsChannel5 teens and vandals break into the church on a regular basis, and she wants Cleveland’s Department of Building and Housing to take action and tear it down.

“This building right here is a trap for every child with an imagination,” explained Gardner. “I don’t want some mother standing on television saying they found their child’s body, or their child was playing in this building and he has broken a leg, or the building collapsed.”
