On Thursday, the Ohio Supreme Court suspended the law license of Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Angela Stokes until disciplinary charges pending against her are resolved.

In a complaint, the court’s disciplinary office asked the state’s top court last month to block her from practicing law to prevent her from again hearing criminal cases.

The 49-page complaint charges she abuses court resources, lawyers, court staff and defendants who appear before her. The complaint recommended to the Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline that Stokes be ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination because she may be “suffering from a mental illness that substantially impairs her ability to perform her duties as a judicial officer.”

Her courtroom behavior has resulted in many complaints. The state disciplinary office began an investigation and prompted Cleveland Municipal Court’s administrative judge Ron Adrine to pull her criminal docket earlier this year.
