More than 40 of Cleveland’s homeless have lifesaving warmth because of a unique product from Australia.

The company, Swags for Homeless, makes special backpack beds that combine a mattress, sleeping bag and tent all in one.

The backpack has earned seven international product design awards. Volunteer Mel Leeb leads the effort to get them to Cleveland’s homeless that resist staying in shelters.

“They are designed specifically for the homeless,” Leeb said. “They’re waterproof, they’re windproof, they are fire retardant so they won’t burn, and they are also mildew resistant so they are really high quality and they are really meant to withstand the elements and also to really keep in your own body heat.”

Leeb works with two Cleveland agencies that know of at least 100 shelter resistant homeless in need.
