Former shoppers flocked to North Randall on Monday to snap one last picture of the Randall Park Mall.

What was once one of the largest shopping malls in the country is being torn down to make way for an industrial park that will include manufacturing and warehouse distribution.

“I did a lot of Christmas shopping here,” said Dave Gembicki, who drove in from Portage County with his camera and two dogs. “It’s going to be a shame to see it go.”

The mall’s demise began in the 1990s. North Randall Mayor David Smith was a councilman then. He remembers that every time the mall changed owners, security decreased and merchants moved out.

The new industrial park could create as many as 1,000 new jobs in North Randall over the next few years.
