There is an acute epidemic running rampant in the faith community and its victims fail to be faithful to their own body. Many thank God for life, yet are so unhealthy that they are consistently robbing themselves of that life. As a pastor, I have witnessed first hand the culture of the faith community around issues of health, particularly in the African-American faith community.

Much of America has been plagued with apathy around health. Generational perspectives around medicine and health have been passed down and perpetuated within the walls of the faith community. Some have a shallow theological perspective that says,“Trust God and don’t take your medicine” when in fact God made doctors as a conduit of health.

There exists a historical suspicion and demonization of medicine. Many don’t go to the doctor for regular check-ups. Often, health issues are made light of as being “a little sugar” when in fact the person could be a few hours away from a diabetic coma.

I’ve traveled around the country and have concluded that faith communities are a large contributor to bad health. Often after preaching, plates of fried chicken or pork chops with mac and cheese and an endless display of sweets from the church mothers were sprawled in front me for consumption.
